Transitioning to Primary School

The transition to school is a key event in a child’s life. It is also a major event in the lives of their parents. Autistic children are considered to be vulnerable in the transition process because of their different styles of social communication and social interaction and difficulties with change. This page contains information and resources that will help you to think about how you can prepare for the transition to school.

A Communication Resource Booklet that the SLT Autism SIG developed in collaboration with Asiam in 2019 for Early Years Specialist Teachers. This resource is designed to be used when carrying out a preschool observation. It contains probing questions relating to the child’s communication and interactions skills, the communication partner and the environment. Each question has a corresponding handout with information and strategies that can be shared with preschool staff.
